Helping International Pharmacy Graduates (IPGs) Practice in a Multicultural Pharmacy

The role and responsibilities of pharmacists and the way they interact with patients, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy managers/owners and other pharmacy staff members vary significantly from country to country. As a result, running a multicultural pharmacy that includes IPG students and interns can be a challenge. Preceptors need to ensure that interns provide good patient care and customer service, communicate well with everyone, develop superior patient counselling skills and overall become valued contributors to their pharmacy team.
This workshop is designed to help preceptors understand the challenges and opportunities that preceptors and students/interns face when IPGs join a pharmacy practice site. It provides concrete tips and suggestions that preceptors and students/interns can implement in order to increase the effectiveness of their pharmacy as a whole. Experience gathered during previous Advanced Preceptor Workshops indicates that many preceptors have found the information, tips and knowledge provided during this workshop applicable to their interactions not only with their students and interns but also with culturally different patients, colleagues and other staff.
Learning objectives:
- By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the key challenges faced by IPG interns when they interact with patients, pharmacy technicians, preceptors and pharmacy staff members
- Communicate effectively with culturally different patients, interns and staff members
- Provide feedback to interns so that interns understand the messages they receive the way they were meant
- Help interns become part of their team
